The Field and Location

A beautiful site with a level well drained strip

Location

The club site is accessed from the A1198 that runs from the A505 near Royston. Details and directions are provided at time of enquiry.

Note: The club operates on private land which is not to be accessed without prior agreement from an Executive Committee Member.
See our membership page to arrange a visit if you are interested in joining.

The Field

The entire flying field is just over 23 acres, much of it worked arable land. Additional airspace exists to the south west without any restriction allowing for a longer approach if the need arises. Club operations including the club hut, runway, taxi way, flight line and pits are all contained within a grassed area of approximately 4 acres.

A little gem in a tranquil setting...

Day at the field

The runway is oriented south west to north east providing a great flying aspect. The sun, during the summer months, gradually passes from behind around to the left by late afternoon as you look out to the field. Unhindered outward views without conflicting backdrops of trees or buildings aid pilots in keeping good visibility of their models at all times.

The taxi strips and runway have been caringly looked after by Dave, our greenskeeper and club member. The continual maintenance has provided a very level, firm and well drained runway without ruts or bumps. A small area to the north of the club hut away from the main runway provides for hover training or fine tuning for our helicopter enthusiasts.

Facilities

Several picnic benches and four giant parasols line the pits area for pre-flight set up or a coffee and a chat! The simple club hut has seating and a small preparation area for hot drinks and a generator to the rear. A first aid kit, two fire extinguishers and accident log book can be found inside along with a telescopic windsock and additional collapsible tables. A notice board displays any relevant information along with a ‘no fly’ zone map.

Ample parking is provided next to the field and when it’s not too wet we allow members to drive onto the field to unload models and equipment.

Ready for take off!
