BMFA membership is mandatory. BMFA membership can be obtained here BMFA Membership

We are currently at capacity for 2021, but from time to time spaces pop up.

The club is open to almost all types of RC model aircraft with very few restrictions imposed, although turbine fixed wing aircraft are not suitable. When we have spaces, we look for enthusiastic individuals who have a fascination as we do with flying models. You might be fairly new to model flight or a veteran, either way we are interested to hear from you. We will always make sure that you are familiar with safe practices and are capable of flying your chosen model or models. We like the words ‘relaxed’ and ‘safe’, as they describe our club perfectly.

We do not stipulate that you have obtained an A or B certificate unless we feel that the nature of the model you intend to fly warrants it. However, we encourage members to attain at least the A cert.

However, if the need arises, our own BMFA certified Chief examiner is able to provide advice, preparation and examination for BMFA ‘A’ and ‘B’ certificates for heli, aero and multi-rotor.

Beginners

We’ve all been there and we all had to start at the beginning. We have limited ability to accommodate beginners and available hands on help can vary from time to time. If you are already in the air and looking to improve we can certainly help there. Our best advice is to contact us to discuss your goals.

Progression

The club is fortunate to have key members with specific accreditations to help with certain aspects of the model flying hobby such as BMFA 'A' & 'B' certification. Chief BMFA examiner Greg Butterworth can help candidates to prepare for the requirements of 'A' and 'B' certification prior to carrying out examinations. The South Cambridgeshire Model Flying Club encourages all members to attain these certifications as they provide a great foundation to build further skills.

Over 25Kg Large Model Association (LMA) Scheme

Resident club member Nigel Brackley, an appointed, certfied LMA inspector can help with the whole LMA process from registration through to examination. Models weighing over 25kg MTOW in the UK are subject to a mandatory requirement as set out by the ANO (Air Navigation Order). These aircraft are regarded as full size aircraft but are recognised by the CAA as unable to comply with the same rules. The LMA are accredited by the CAA to provide and administer a scheme which allow these larger models to be issued with an exemption to fly by the CAA providing certain criteria are met. For further information see the Large Model Association website
